
The root system of jasmine is often misunderstood. We observe that the majority of cultivation failures, both in the ground and in pots, stem from a lack of understanding of the plant’s underground architecture, rather than from a deficiency in watering or fertilization.
Horizontal Extension of Jasmine Roots and Impact on Soil
The roots of jasmine remain relatively superficial, but their lateral development is the most underestimated limiting factor. In species of the genus Jasminum, the central taproot remains modest. It is the horizontal branching that colonizes the substrate and captures the available water in the top few centimeters of soil.

This root behavior has a direct consequence on the choice of location. A jasmine planted too close to a foundation or a masonry border will eventually find itself competing with a physical obstacle. We recommend allowing a free zone of at least the estimated width of the plant’s adult spread, anticipating both the underground spread and the aerial foliage.
When studying deep jasmine roots, it is noted that root density concentrates in the top layer of soil. An organic mulch applied to this area improves moisture retention without compacting the soil, which corresponds to the root exploration mode of jasmine.

A compact or clayey soil that retains water at depth causes rapid necrosis of the root hairs, well before the foliage shows signs of stress.
Drainage takes precedence over substrate richness. A well-draining and moderately fertile soil produces more consistent flowering than a rich but heavy soil. We observe that many gardeners enrich their soil with compost without correcting the physical structure of the soil, which exacerbates water retention.
Here are the criteria to check before any planting in the ground:
- Conduct a percolation test by digging a hole the depth of a spade, filling it with water, and checking that it empties in less than a few hours
- Incorporate perlite, coarse sand, or gravel into heavy soils to break up water pockets
- Avoid planting in low spots of the garden, where runoff water naturally accumulates
In pots, the principle remains the same. A deep container without functional drainage holes turns the substrate into an anaerobic environment. A pot of good depth with a drainage layer is better than a large poorly-drained container.
Repotting Jasmine and Managing Root Blockage
Jasmine grown in containers eventually saturates its volume of roots. This root blockage (or gnarling) manifests as declining flowering, yellowing foliage despite proper watering, and visible roots on the surface or emerging through the drainage holes.
We recommend renewing the container or substrate approximately every two years. Repotting does not necessarily mean moving to a larger pot. Sometimes, it is sufficient to untangle the roots, remove the lower third of the compacted root mass, and place the plant back in the same pot with fresh substrate.
Points to respect during repotting:
- Choose a substrate composed of horticultural soil, mature compost, and perlite to maintain a good aeration/retention ratio
- Do not oversize the pot; excess uncolonized substrate remains wet too long and promotes pathogens

Cold Tolerance According to Jasmine Species and Root Consequences
The hardiness of jasmine varies radically from one species to another, and it is the root system that suffers the first damage from frost. Winter jasmines (Jasminum nudiflorum) tolerate marked negative temperatures. Summer jasmines (Jasminum officinale) withstand moderate cold. Tropical species like Jasminum sambac do not tolerate frost and must be grown in pots to be brought indoors before cool nights.
In the ground, a thick mulch protects the superficial root zone against freeze-thaw cycles that fragment fine roots. In pots, the substrate freezes faster than in the ground, as the container offers no thermal inertia. A winter cover on the pot itself, not just on the aerial part, limits damage.
Fertilization in the Ground and in Pots: Two Distinct Logics
In the ground, an annual organic mulch is usually sufficient to nourish an established jasmine. Regular fertilizer application is rarely necessary if the soil is alive and well-structured.
In pots, the situation changes. The limited volume of substrate depletes quickly. A fertilizer suitable for the flowering cycle, applied from spring to late summer, compensates for this constraint. We observe that container-grown subjects actively fed during the growing season produce significantly more sustained flowering than those left without input.
The depth of jasmine roots is not the parameter to monitor as a priority. What determines success is the quality of the environment in which these roots develop: well-draining soil, regularly renewed substrate in pots, and appropriate winter protection for the cultivated species.
